Why TENCEL™ Lyocell

TENCEL™ is a branded lyocell fibre that comes from the pulp of trees.

The benefits of using TENCEL™ lyocell include the traceable and sustainable origin of the wood pulp, and the use of a closed loop solvent and water recycling process. In addition, TENCEL™ lyocell is a high-tenacity cellulosic fibre, which gives high strength properties to the fabric.

What TENCEL™ Lyocell actually does

Wood pulp in, fibre out. The difference shows up by mid-afternoon.

BREATHABLE

TENCEL™ Lyocell absorbs sweat into the fibre core instead, so the fabric against your skin stays drier for longer.

ODOUR RESISTANT

TENCEL™ Lyocell absorbs sweat quickly and releases it into the air. By keeping your skin dry, it minimizes the damp environment that causes odour.

NATURAL

The wood is sourced from certified or controlled forests under FSC and PEFC standards, and the fibre carries the EU Ecolabel.

Common questions

Is TENCEL™ Lyocell better than cotton for underwear?

For moisture and odour, yes. Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it against your skin. TENCEL™ Lyocell pulls it into the fibre so the surface stays drier.

Is TENCEL™ Lyocell the same as lyocell?

Lyocell is the generic fibre type. TENCEL™ is the Lenzing branded version, produced to a specific standard with certified wood sourcing. Not all lyocell is TENCEL™.

Does TENCEL™ Lyocell shrink?

It is more dimensionally stable than cotton. Cold wash and low heat and you will not see meaningful shrinkage.

Is it breathable?

Yes. The fibre absorbs and releases moisture, which supports a drier layer against your skin and better airflow than a synthetic of similar weight.

Does it hold odour?

Less than cotton and considerably less than polyester. A drier fibre surface is a worse environment for the bacteria that cause smell.

Is TENCEL™ Lyocell good for sensitive skin?

The smooth fibre surface means less friction and less irritation than a rougher fibre like cotton. If chafing is your issue, this is the material change that helps.

Is it warm or cool?

Cool in heat, because it keeps surface moisture down. It is not an insulating fibre, so it is not a thermal layer on its own.

Is TENCEL™ Lyocell sustainable?

The fibre is made from wood from certified or controlled forests in a closed loop process that recovers over 99.8% of its solvent. That is the fibre. The finished product also contains elastane, which is a synthetic, so we do not make end-of-life claims about the garment.
